[ 1 ] Chaplin stars in this film, loosely based on the poem of the same name by Hugh Antoine d'Arcy . Plot A devastated tramp ( Charlie Chaplin ) visits a crowd-filled bar and recounts the story of how he fell in love with a woman and then had her taken by a friend of his. Drunk, he keeps trying to draw the woman's picture on the floor with a piece of chalk, and gets into fights with other men in the process. He eventually passes out “dead drunk” (thus deviating from the poem, where the protagonist actually falls “dead”) at the end of the film. According to Chaplin expert Gerald D. McDonald, \"The subtitles of the film were lines from the poem, but the original verses were altered to match the Keystone credo that life is a funny game at best.\" Cast Charlie Chaplin - Artist\u002FTramp Cecile Arnold - Madeline Fritz Schade - Drinker Vivian Edwards - Model Chester Conklin - Drinker Harry McCoy - Drinker Hank Mann - Drinker Wallace MacDonald - Drinker Edward Nolan - Bartender Reception A reviewer for The Moving Picture World gave the film a favorable review, writing \"Chas. Chaplain [sic] wins new laurels in the leading part. This is bound to please.\" [ 2 ] References 1 Walker, Brent E. (2010). The painter courts Madeleine but loses to the wealthy client who sits for his portrait. The despairing artist draws the girl's portrait on the barroom floor and gets tossed out. Years later he sees her, her husband and their horde of children. Unrecognized by her, Charlie shakes off his troubles and walks off into the future.","Charles Chaplin","Hugh Antoine d'Arcy, Charles Chaplin","Charles Chaplin, Cecile Arnold, Jess Dandy","None, English","United States","N\u002FA",[57,58,59,60,61,62,63,64,65,66,67,68],"tt0004693","tt0003760","tt0003863","tt0004007","tt0004011","tt0004100","tt0004101","tt0004102","tt0004108","tt0004210","tt0004311","tt0004395",[70,73,76,79,81,84,87,90,93,95],{"movieId":71,"distance":72},"tt0450702",0.6164,{"movieId":74,"distance":75},"tt0440280",0.6219,{"movieId":77,"distance":78},"archive-silent-the-face-on-the-bar-room-floor",0.6238,{"movieId":63,"distance":80},0.6374,{"movieId":82,"distance":83},"tt0004091",0.6377,{"movieId":85,"distance":86},"tt0006548",0.6379,{"movieId":88,"distance":89},"tt23147084",0.6382,{"movieId":91,"distance":92},"tt5854638",0.6389,{"movieId":66,"distance":94},0.6392,{"movieId":96,"distance":97},"tt0200500",0.6405,[],true,false,"2026-01-07T18:30:51.539Z",1779355485828]
